On this day 2018.
Celebrating a year of daily cartoons.
Some things in life truly compel us forward, as if by an unknown source and against many greater forces that push back on us. What do you wake up every day and find yourself compelled to do?
Really any activity can potentially be overdone, or done to the point of side effects that are perhaps less than optimal. In these moments, practicing self-understanding that is a mix of both wishes for our joy to continue and wishes for our suffering to lessen is probably a lifelong effort and art. And yet this practice may be at the root of our capacity to have real compassion and compersion for others, as well. When you go a little too far, what helps you say, "Whoops!", and respond wisely to yourself?
Hate may be a strong word. And sometimes it's the perfect word for blowing off some steam in an irreverent way. What's something you could use a little permission to go ahead and hate today?
We busy ourselves to avoid a whole range of complicated thoughts and feelings about life, not just thoughts about death. And staying busy can be an important and welcome way of staying healthy mentally and emotionally. At the same time, we may not be aware of the way being busy plays out in our day. Some gentle awareness of how we occupy ourselves and the impact our activity has on our energy levels and mood can support our ability to toggle between doing and being mindfully. What's one way you're doing life today? And what's one way you're being in life today?
Our work lives do not always support our wholeness. With so much emphasis on doing, work can be really bad at giving us the space we all need for just being. Computer screens, to-do lists, and deadlines in particular may be poor helpers for the parts of us experiencing big emotional processes. In big or small ways, how do reclaim your wholeness at work?
It's not always easy to tell what's going on inside of ourselves. And sometimes our emotional states show up and compel us and our behavior. Just admitting that we don't know or are having a hard time can itself be both hard and healing. What's something about your emotional experience today that you're not sure about?
Our actions don't always make sense. What's something you do that is a little ridiculous?
Sometimes we purposefully bump up against each other in ways that we intend to be experienced as playful and fun for everyone. What helps you to be playful in attuned and responsive ways?
Creativity is a beloved strategy by many people and groups for many of life's challenges. Examples include: the portmanteau artivism's spreading wings of social change, healing, and joy in part through the funding that FRIDA has helped to redistribute around the world (www.youngfeministfund.org/issues/artivism); Julia Cameron's popular work with The Artist's Way (www.juliacameronlive.com); everything about The Creative Liberation Network (www.clnnow.us); and Forward Together's commitment to re-authoring and re-imagining public narratives on motherhood and Mamas Day (www.forwardtogether.org/mamasday). Whether structured through an organization, emergent and in flow in your daily life, public, or private, where is creativity alive in your world? Are there other creative projects, organizations, and practices that you want the whole world to know about?
We may want to let go of some arguments for the sake of connection. At the same time, it's ok to want to be right. It's ok to fight for what we believe in and what we sense is good. We don't have to give up on our values and convictions, or on our experiences of life, in order to embrace moments of stretching around the how and the how much we are holding our point of view. Taking an intentional breath to expand the lungs and the body, and to expand time and space, around our needs, desires, and causes, can open us to more freedom and love through empathy, compassion, and perspective-taking — even as we practice in these ways, we never have to give up on ourselves and our truths in that process. How do you practice holding both connection and conviction together?
I love you already.
