Sometimes it can be hard to imagine exactly what it was like to be a human in other times in history. We can have a forgetfulness, a myopia about just how many human experiences there have been that differ from our own. We may even have an amnesia about concepts that we think we invented, but in fact already existed in our culture, like when confelicity was briefly popular in the early twentieth century among psychologists. How do you imagine people used the word confelicity in the early twentieth century? [image description: A heart wearing a fun hat and using a cane stands smiling toward another heart that bows forward slightly, tips its hat in the air, and smiles back at the first heart. Text reads: "confelicity" at the top and below, "With happiness. Pleasure in another's joy."] #MindfulHearts retrospective. On this day 2021. On this day 2020. On this day 2019. In response to the much-needed call for #COVIDCompassion, #MindfulHearts offers the sister chant of #QuarantineCompersion.
The art and skill of understanding the suffering of others and feeling and acting on the impulse to lessen that suffering goes hand in hand with the art and skill of feeling and acting on the impulse to nourish joy everywhere. May we all have moments of joy that grow and extend through the times we live in and beyond. |
