We may be good at remembering that we project human attributes on other animal species and overly imagine them to have the same kinds of experiences that we do. At the same time, we may also need to remember that we can at times overly imagine that other animals are nothing like us. But perhaps there is something in common. What have you learned about shared joy from animals? [image description: A kea parrot is foregrounded so that only its bust appears in the frame. The parrot appears to be smiling. In the distance a heart stands smiling toward the kea bird. Text reads: "infectious laugh" and below that, "Positive emotional contagion."] #MindfulHearts retrospective. On this day 2021. In response to the much-needed call for #COVIDCompassion, #MindfulHearts offers the sister chant of #QuarantineCompersion.
The art and skill of understanding the suffering of others and feeling and acting on the impulse to lessen that suffering goes hand in hand with the art and skill of feeling and acting on the impulse to nourish joy everywhere. May we all have moments of joy that grow and extend through the times we live in and beyond. |
