In 2019, I came back from Burning Man and wrote, "change is a constant, and we can keep growing," along with this cartoon. My dear friend Marlon reached out to me and told me that he wanted to talk to me about these ideas about revising the ten Burning Man Project principles. A year later and multiple conversations later, he worked his way into more conversations with more burners about a need to collectively revise the ten principles. This year, I added more hearts to the drawing and I added Marlon's thoughts. With these new edits, what reactions and responses do you have now?

[image description: A heart, with a hand to its chin and the other hand holding a pen, looks ponderously at five of Burning Man Project's principles that have been marked up with red ink. "Radical Inclusion" has been edited to "Racial! Inclusion." "Gifting" has been edited to "Resourcing?" "Decommodification" has been edited to "De-colonizing." "Radical Self-reliance" has been edited to "Radical Interdependence!" "Communal Effort" has been edited to "Collective Care?" Two more smiling hearts also appear nearby, both also holding a pen and one with a power fist raised into the air. In blue ink, several words are underlined and emphasized, including "De-colonizing," and the phrase "MUTUAL AID & JOY" appears above "Gifting."]

In response to the much-needed call for #COVIDCompassion, #MindfulHearts offers the sister chant of #QuarantineCompersion.
The art and skill of understanding the suffering of others and feeling and acting on the impulse to lessen that suffering goes hand in hand with the art and skill of feeling and acting on the impulse to nourish joy everywhere. May we all have moments of joy that grow and extend through the times we live in and beyond. |
