Maybe the basis of most (or perhaps in a way all) relationships is friendship. In English, the root of the words friend and free are the same and mean "to love." And so maybe the things we need most in any relationship — from our relationship with our healthcare providers to a person we have never met around the world from us to someone yelling at us in a park to our own romantic partners and family members — are friendship, freedom, and loving connection. Tell (or tag) a friend what your friendship means to you.

Another heart wearing a mask over its nose and mouth stands nearby and rests a supportive hand on the shoulder of the sitting heart. In response, the sitting heart has the thought: "Hope." Text reads: "Friendship matters. More than we often realize. 4 OCTOBER 2020"]
Throughout the pandemic, I have posted messages on my Facebook wall that I needed to hear myself or that I imagined others may be needing to hear. Again and again, these messages spurred collective online processing of a range of challenges and lows and bright spots of living through the pandemic. This series of cartoons is intended to reflect on and illustrate some of the process of dealing with life by leaning into the intersection of technology and community. |
