When times are tough, noticing joy may seem hard, out of sync and misattuned, or even misguided. But bearing witness to joy does not mean we give up the rest of life as it is happening. We can include sadness and joy together. We can feel both compassion and compersion at the same time. But to do so, we may need a willingness to see both distress and delight, both mourning and celebration. We may need to say yes to wonder in the midst of suffering. Help tracking joy can come from a friend, a book, a therapist, animals and children, and really, from a wide range of inputs. What helps you recognize and include joy in hard times?

In response to the much-needed call for #COVIDCompassion, #MindfulHearts offers the sister chant of #QuarantineCompersion. The art and skill of understanding the suffering of others and feeling and acting on the impulse to lessen that suffering goes hand in hand with the art and skill of feeling and acting on the impulse to nourish joy everywhere. May we all have moments of joy that grow and extend through the times we live in and beyond.
