On 22 June 2022, my mother Karen Hagrup died at the age 80. After her cancer diagnosis in 2021, I visited her when I could and was by her side every day for the last five months of her life. She moved through this period of her life with grace and aliveness, facing life head on. I am now moving through a great mix of sadness and gratitude. My mother was an absolutely stellar human being, and we had a rare and powerful connection. I ache for her, and yet I have her right here with me always. You can read her obituary here, and you can read more about her life at www.MeetMeInTheMargin.com where I continue to share the story of her life, a project we've been working on together, gratefully, for long enough that I have most of the material I need to finish. [image description: A heart with a slightly furrowed brow sits with legs crossed on the ground. On both sides of the heart sit two more hearts, four total, also sitting on the ground with legs crossed and somber facial expressions. All of the hearts have arms held around each others' shoulders and backs. Text above the hearts reads: "Sitting shiva."] #MindfulHearts RETROSPECTIVE ~ 7/1 ~ on this day 2021 2020 2019 2018 ~ celebrating four years of daily cartoons ~

In response to the much-needed call for #COVIDCompassion, #MindfulHearts offers the sister chant of #QuarantineCompersion.
The art and skill of understanding the suffering of others and feeling and acting on the impulse to lessen that suffering goes hand in hand with the art and skill of feeling and acting on the impulse to nourish joy everywhere. May we all have moments of joy that grow and extend through the times we live in and beyond. |
