While past suicide attempts are a statistically significant predictor of recurrent suicidality, a history of attempts is not alone a cause of suicidality or a complete explanation for how suicide is progressing in a person. The underlying, complex factors that lead to the original attempt in the first place are still key factors that need focused attention and care. And yet, acknowledging both treated and untreated suicide attempts and suicidality and holding in mind people's histories with suicidality can support communities in applying that focused attention and care. In response to the much-needed call for #COVIDCompassion, #MindfulHearts offers the sister chant of #QuarantineCompersion.
The art and skill of understanding the suffering of others and feeling and acting on the impulse to lessen that suffering goes hand in hand with the art and skill of feeling and acting on the impulse to nourish joy everywhere. May we all have moments of joy that grow and extend through the times we live in and beyond. |
