In some versions of therapy, resistance has been viewed as a malady, a willful aversion to healing. Yes, resistance can indicate a calcified protection toward seeing and tending to a more vulnerable part of ourselves. But the larger truth of resistance may be that this process itself is a universal, benign force that we all practice with in different ways, for different reasons, and at different times in life, moving into more or less of it contextually. One way that we can and maybe need to practice with resistance is by taking a stand for our own experience and reality. Standing up for ourselves in therapy can itself be healing, no matter what the reaction or response is to us. What's one way that you practice with resistance in therapy or in life?
