One of the scarier times that we need to speak up is when we are needing to repeat something that we have already said. People, both ourselves and others, can feel frustrated with the repetition and this frustration can be painful in itself, and worse, it can cause the message to get watered down. Sometimes the repetition is outright shamed, mocked, or in many other ways silenced, as with tropes like "don't be a nag," "you're ridiculous when you harp on things," and "be quiet, feminazi." It takes a ton of resilience and courage to speak up in the face of so much hate and aggression and violence. But repetition is fundamental to learning, growth, and positive change. What helps you speak your message again and again and as many times as you need to say it? In response to the much-needed call for #COVIDCompassion, #MindfulHearts offers the sister chant of #QuarantineCompersion.
The art and skill of understanding the suffering of others and feeling and acting on the impulse to lessen that suffering goes hand in hand with the art and skill of feeling and acting on the impulse to nourish joy everywhere. May we all have moments of joy that grow and extend through the times we live in and beyond. |
