We all have a range of strategies to deal with life and protect ourselves, some of which develop into stronger patterns in our personalities. And even when we can see how our past or older survival strategies are not the best for us anymore, don't like, fear, or resent these aspects of ourselves, and have or want to have grown beyond them, we can practice mindfully appreciating these crunchier parts of ourselves by showing them love while maintaining internal boundaries. In other words, we can give these parts ourselves unconditional positive regard without collapsing into their ruling over us entirely. What helps you have compassion for some of your more challenging states and characteristics while also keeping internal boundaries with them? [image description: A heart looks in on its own heart. The inner heart has an angry but curious facial expression while listening to the bigger heart say, "It's ok to be mad. Where does it hurt? What do you need?" Text reads: "Non-judgment of myself helps me make peace with my inner critic."] #MindfulHearts retrospective. On this day 2020. On this day 2019. Celebrating two years of daily cartoons.

In response to the much-needed call for #COVIDCompassion, #MindfulHearts offers the sister chant of #QuarantineCompersion.
The art and skill of understanding the suffering of others and feeling and acting on the impulse to lessen that suffering goes hand in hand with the art and skill of feeling and acting on the impulse to nourish joy everywhere. May we all have moments of joy that grow and extend through the times we live in and beyond. |
