Respecting our own boundaries is not always for everyone an immediately obvious way of being in the world. We may have to first learn our boundaries or learn how to identify our boundaries as they develop and change. We may then have to practice speaking in ways that are unfamiliar and uncommon in the wider culture. And we may have to grow a new understanding of boundaries as love. This all together can take a lot of time and practice before we are good at holding our own boundaries with others and for ourselves. But just starting the process with a proclamation of the importance of our boundaries, and coming back to this mantra again and again, can support lifelong capacity to honor and respect personal boundaries in general. What do you believe to be true about your personal boundaries? What mantra or statement about your personal boundaries helps you continue learning about them and practicing expressing, enforcing, and honoring them? [image description: A smiling heart stands inside an ovular boundary drawn on the ground. The heart's arms are fully extended to its sides, palms facing outward in a boundary-marking gesture. Text reads: "My personal BOUNDARIES are important to me."] #MindfulHearts retrospective. On this day 2020. On this day 2019. Celebrating two years of daily cartoons.

In response to the much-needed call for #COVIDCompassion, #MindfulHearts offers the sister chant of #QuarantineCompersion.
The art and skill of understanding the suffering of others and feeling and acting on the impulse to lessen that suffering goes hand in hand with the art and skill of feeling and acting on the impulse to nourish joy everywhere. May we all have moments of joy that grow and extend through the times we live in and beyond. |
