The concept of goodwill may not spring to mind when considering a shared feeling of joy. But empathy can be broken into at least three parts, perspective taking, emotional resonance, and affective responsiveness. That third commonly recognized part of empathy, affective responsiveness, often boiled down to compassion, is about the impulse to support the other's experience. In the case of compassion, the hope is for another's suffering to lessen. In the case of compersion, the hope is for another's joy to grow and last. Taking the entire other's experience into account, goodwill and benevolence are aspects of positive empathy where the hope is for another's life to be good, for them to be well and happy overall. What does the word goodwill mean to you? [image description: Two hearts stand facing each other. The heart on the left smiles and holds its hands, palms cupped upward, toward the other hand. Floating above the heart's hands is a tiny, golden sun with rays. The heart on the right smiles down at the tiny sun and places its hands in front of its chest palms laying flat against each other in a prayer gesture. Text reads: "goodwill" above and below that, "The friendly hope for universal wellbeing."] #MindfulHearts retrospective. On this day 2021. On this day 2020. On this day 2019. In response to the much-needed call for #COVIDCompassion, #MindfulHearts offers the sister chant of #QuarantineCompersion.
The art and skill of understanding the suffering of others and feeling and acting on the impulse to lessen that suffering goes hand in hand with the art and skill of feeling and acting on the impulse to nourish joy everywhere. May we all have moments of joy that grow and extend through the times we live in and beyond. |
