Play can be — and many times is — nonverbal. When we play, we may be focused on observing, reacting, and spontaneous movement. Yet, words can be important for helping us to stay alert and play safely. Without words, we may need additional strategies to stay safe, strategies that keep us engaged and aware at the same time.
