For many reasons, our joy may forever be intimately wrapped up in the joy of those who are halfway around the planet from us. In today's world order, economic forces certainly press us in different directions in direct relationship with each other. Through communication technology and media, we may also be more or less aware on different days in different moments that people in other places are also struggling. At the same time, the less awake we are to suffering that is occurring around the world, the more numb we likely are inside. This numbness affects our whole inner system, including our own joy. In other words, perhaps we must in fact feel it all around the world in order to feel any of it fully within ourselves. Uplift a story of joy about someone far away from you, physically, materially, or philosophically.

In response to the much-needed call for #COVIDCompassion, #MindfulHearts offers the sister chant of #QuarantineCompersion. The art and skill of understanding the suffering of others and feeling and acting on the impulse to lessen that suffering goes hand in hand with the art and skill of feeling and acting on the impulse to nourish joy everywhere. May we all have moments of joy that grow and extend through the times we live in and beyond.
