At times, we may wonder if there is a right way to grieve, a way that we are "supposed to" grieve, especially after a loss from suicide. The truth is that anything we experience related to the loss is part of the grieving process. This could include anger, shock, numbing, travel, staying home, working more, working less, eating more, eating less, depression or anxiety, forgetfulness, sleeping more, sleeping less, body soreness or stiffness, fewer spoken words, more spoken words, hyper focus, hyper vigilance, changing jobs or relationships, boredom, and truly an endless number of other possible reactions and experiences. Some of our grief may be surprising to us or hard to reconcile with dominant narratives of how loss goes for people. At moments or in lasting ways, we may experience profound calm or extreme joy while we move through our grief, even with the loss of loved ones from suicide. There is no one way and no right way to grieve. People simply have whatever grief experience they have. In response to the much-needed call for #COVIDCompassion, #MindfulHearts offers the sister chant of #QuarantineCompersion.
The art and skill of understanding the suffering of others and feeling and acting on the impulse to lessen that suffering goes hand in hand with the art and skill of feeling and acting on the impulse to nourish joy everywhere. May we all have moments of joy that grow and extend through the times we live in and beyond. |
