In addition to compassion and jealousy, compersion has a third opposite: schadenfreude. Schadenfreude is the pleasure one takes in another's pain. Schadenfreude may in fact be the closest opposite of jealousy. Schadenfreude and jealousy are two emotional sides of the same coin of acrimony. Compassion and compersion are two emotional sides of care. Have you ever experienced schadenfreude and jealousy together? What was the experience like? [image description: A pair of hearts on the left smile at each other. On the right, stand the same pair of hearts, one of them frowning and the other looking at the frowning heart with a smirk. Text reads: "compersion" above and below that, "The opposite of schadenfreude. Positive feelings about your partner's joy."] #MindfulHearts retrospective. On this day 2021. On this day 2020. In response to the much-needed call for #COVIDCompassion, #MindfulHearts offers the sister chant of #QuarantineCompersion.
The art and skill of understanding the suffering of others and feeling and acting on the impulse to lessen that suffering goes hand in hand with the art and skill of feeling and acting on the impulse to nourish joy everywhere. May we all have moments of joy that grow and extend through the times we live in and beyond. |
